The President's Budget Addresses Many of the 3rd District's Concerns

Gold River, CA – Congressman Dan Lungren, CA-3rd Gold River, applauded the inclusion of a number of local flood control projects in the President’s budget submission to Congress.  Included in that submission were:

  • $10.9 million for the Sacramento River bank protection project
  • $7.3 million for South Sacramento County Streams
  • $4.4 million for American River Common Features
  • $15 million for continued construction on the Folsom Dam Bridge
  • $8.4 million for the American River Dam Raise
  • $6 million for the American River Folsom Dam Modifications

In response to the inclusion of these projects and programs in the President’s budget submission, Congressman Lungren made the following statement:  “Capital Region families are all too familiar with the threat flood waters pose to the safety, homes and livelihoods of area residents.  Understanding the significant threat levee failure and large scale flooding pose to the region, California representatives have made identifying and securing the funds necessary to mitigate the risk of catastrophic flooding a top priority.”

“In October of 2005 I joined with a number of California’s representatives, including Senator Feinstein, Congressman Pombo, Congresswoman Matsui and Congressman Thomas, to request funding consideration by the President for a number of programs and projects we believe are essential to the long term safety of Capital Region residents.  We specifically requested funding for levee reinforcement and the necessary studies to identify the areas at greatest risk.  I was pleased the majority of the projects and programs for which we requested funding in October were included in the President’s budget submission.”

“Since my return to Congress in 2005 I have worked closely with Congressman John Doolittle, Roseville CA-4th, and many area stakeholders to receive the federal recognition and funding for the modification of the American River Dam and the Folsom Dam to ensure their long-term effectiveness.  This year’s budget submission is a down payment on the future security of the area.  This is a clear sign of the federal government’s commitment to the process, but there is more to be done, including taking a long look at the feasibility of an Auburn Dam.”

The President understands the risk of inaction with regard to flood control and protection, and I believe this is a significant step toward securing the Capital Region from the threat of catastrophic flood.”
