Sacramento Region Receives Dam Safety & Flood Control Funding

(Washington, DC)— Congressman Lungren announced that the House passed Conference Report H.R. 2419, the Energy and Water Development Act of 2006, containing over $28 million for flood control measures for the Sacramento region.  Specific to the Third Congressional District, Congressman Lungren helped secure:

  1. $5 million for the raise at Folsom Dam
  2. $9.55 million for the Folsom Dam outlet modifications
  3. $4.4 million for the American River Common Element
  4. $10 million for the development and construction of a new Folsom Bridge

The passage of this bill will allocate several millions of dollars to begin work on increasing the security and integrity of the American River levies and the Folsom Dam.  These funds are targeted at increasing the flood protection levels for those living in the flood plains of Folsom Dam and the American River.  In addition, monies for the construction of a new Folsom Bridge will help those impacted by the closure of the Folsom Dam Road and provide greater security for the dam.

“From day one, I have been adamant in my approach to secure the timely construction of the new Folsom Bridge and the modifications to Folsom Dam due to credible security concerns.  In the wake of the catastrophic destruction in New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina, it is imperative that the Sacramento region receive funding to help prevent such a disaster which is why I placed these expenditures on the top of the very short list of projects I sought funds for.

“Additionally, I am happy to report that the bill contained $1 million for an updated economic analysis of costs and benefits of Auburn Dam.  This, too, is part of my commitment to the best means of protecting the people of the Sacramento area from future floods.”

Congressman Lungren will be hosting a town hall on November 28, 2005 from 7-9pm at Empire Oaks Elementary School 1830 Bonhill Drive Folsom, California 95630 to discuss dam safety and flood control issues.
