Rep. Shuler Announces New Funding for WCU Economic Development Program
Washington, DC – Today U.S. Representative Heath Shuler (D-Waynesville) announced the award of a five-year economic development grant valued at $642,960, or $128,592 annually, for Western Carolina University. The competitive grant was awarded through the U.S. Economic Development Agency (EDA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
“The partnership between Western Carolina University and the U.S. Economic Development Administration exemplifies the value of public-private partnerships,” said Rep. Shuler. “For a minimal investment by the federal government, WCU is able to develop critical skill sets among its students and support the regional and state economy through product development and entrepreneurship. This leveraging of resources produces a strong return on investment and we are fortunate to have this program right here at home.”
The five-year University Center Economic Development program will allow WCU to work with the local community to expand high-growth economic opportunities and create new jobs in Western North Carolina.
