Congressman Brian Higgins is inviting students to participate in the annual congressional art competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” The competition, initiated by Congress in 1982, includes hundreds of thousands of high school students from across the nation. One piece from each Congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The winning students are each invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony in the nation’s Capitol.
“Each year we receive an impressive selection of work which exemplifies the fantastic talent of local students,” said Congressman Higgins. “We are proud to take the winning piece to Washington, DC to be displayed in our Nation’s capital and enjoy publicly displaying all of the students’ work both in the Larkin building and through an online gallery.”
Deadline: Students must submit their original artwork by 5:00 pm on Monday, April 23, 2012. Art pieces can be delivered to Congressman Higgins’ Buffalo office at 726 Larkin Street, Suite 601 or the Jamestown office at 2 East Second Street, Suite 300. Participants in Congressman Higgins’ district are invited but not required to submit work featuring a Western New York theme.
Public Gallery: All submissions will be on public display in the first floor lobby at the Larkin at Exchange Building at 726 Exchange Street in Buffalo from April 25th through May 6th. On May 6th Congressman Higgins will host a ceremony and reception for teachers, students and their families where the top winners will be announced.
Virtual Gallery/Contest: From April 25th through May 3rd all submissions will be posted in a virtual gallery on Congressman Higgins website with additional viewing opportunities through the Congressman’s Facebook page and Twitter feed. The public will be able to vote for their favorite pieces online.
Competition Winners: Local leaders in the Western New York art community will help select the winning piece which will be sent to the Capitol. Additional prizes will be awarded for the piece that best represents Western New York and the top vote earner on the online gallery.
Guidelines: The competition is generally open to high school students only, however exceptions will be made for schools that have 7th through 12th grades in one building. Each piece must be no larger than 28 inches by 28 inches to the outside dimensions of the frame and no more than 4 inches in depth.
