Competing for Federal Grants

Each year, the federal government provides thousands of grants to state, local, and tribal governments, public institutions, private nonprofit organizations, and other groups. But to win these grants, applicants must understand the federal grants process and know how to position themselves to compete.

Today’s shrinking federal budget is making the competition red hot. So whether you work for a state or local agency, an educational institution, or a private non-profit organization, if your programs rely on or could benefit from federal funding, now is the time to sharpen your competitive edge. You can do this in just five days. The Grantsmanship Center’s Competing for Federal Grants training will hone your skills and give you the advantage you need to compete at the national level.

By the time federal grant competitions are announced, deadlines are only a few weeks away. That's not enough time to develop a competitive proposal. To be successful, you need to know how to forecast upcoming competitions so you can begin work before the announcements hit. Being proactive gives you time to do the planning, research, and collaboration that result in grant awards.

Competing for Federal Grants will take you through the federal grants process, step by step, saving you time and helping you avoid common mistakes. Our trainers are active and prolific proposal writers who have won millions of dollars in some of the toughest federal competitions. They know what’s happening in the field, understand how federal proposals are reviewed, and are ready to guide you through the process.

Competing for Federal Grants will give you the knowledge and skills you need to:

• Understand federal funding programs
• Read and interpret application guidelines
• Assess whether it makes sense to enter a particular competition
• Assemble a work-plan for proposal development
• Develop effective, well-documented arguments
• Assemble proposals that follow guidelines and respond to the funder's requirements

You’ll use recent application guidelines and funded proposals to examine what works, what doesn’t, and why. If you're planning to submit a proposal in response to specific application guidelines, we encourage you to bring the guidelines along and use them in class exercises. During the training, you'll develop a work plan for proposal development, write key proposal sections, review proposals drafted by your peers, and have your own work reviewed by others.

After completing the training, you may submit a proposal for a review and feedback by your trainer–a valuable benefit at no additional cost. You'll also enjoy a year of free access to The Grantsmanship Center's continuously updated funder databases, as well as discounts on other Grantsmanship Center programs and publications.

Tuition for this comprehensive 5-day training is $1195 (but only $1095 for early registrants).
