Statement of U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert on May Jobs Report

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor reported an increase in the national unemployment rate to 9.1 percent:

“Today’s disappointing jobs report underscores the simple fact that we cannot sustain an economic recovery if Washington refuses to make job growth its top priority.  The debt is draining our economy of jobs, capital, and confidence.  We need to stop the spending, ease tax and regulatory burdens that hinder job creation, and give small businesses the security and confidence they need to grow.  From boosting exports to lowering energy costs, we must use every policy tool in our arsenal to get this economy moving again.  American workers and entrepreneurs are ready to hit the ground running when the economy takes off, but it’s going to require leadership, and that has to start in our nation’s capital.  That’s the message we delivered to the President this week when House Republicans visited the White House to discuss the debt, and I’m hopeful that he’s ready to work with us to make it happen.”
