Reaction of U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-Il-13th) on Passage of So-Called Student Aid Bill

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) issued the following statement today regarding H.R. 2669, the so-called College Cost Reduction Act:

“I cannot support a bill that would establish nine new entitlement programs while using taxpayer dollars to forgive the student loans of professional lobbyists and Members of Congress.  Congress needs to reevaluate its priorities and start directing its attention to those who need it most -- like low and middle-income students struggling to afford a higher education.

That is why I voted for the Roskam motion to strip these wasteful provisions from H.R. 2669.  Unfortunately, this motion failed by a vote of 199 to 223.

I understand the President has indicated that he will likely veto H.R. 2669 should it pass in the Senate.  I look forward to working with my colleagues to enact fiscally responsible legislation that will address the needs of American students without squandering tax dollars on new entitlements for those who need them least.”
