Reaction of U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert to House Vote on Government Health Plan

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today issued the following statement after the House voted by a margin of 220 to 215, with 39 Democrats and all but one Republican voting in opposition, to pass H.R. 3962, the trillion dollar Democrat health bill:

“I’m disappointed but not very surprised that Democrat leaders were able to pressure enough members of their caucus to vote for this extremely misguided government takeover of health care.

“If signed into law as passed, this bill would dramatically increase spending, slash Medicare, and drive families into a government-run system that few believe will lower costs or improve the quality of care.  That is why I voted against the Democrat bill, and instead voted for a responsible GOP alternative, which was estimated by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, to lower premiums by as much as 10 percent.

“I congratulate my Democrat colleagues who stood by their convictions, and voted to reject this flawed approach.  I invite them to join me and others to work towards commonsense, bipartisan solutions that can expand access to those who lack it and lower costs for everyone.

“I also hope that when H.R. 3962 reaches the Senate, more reasonable voices prevail, and this massive government takeover is soundly rejected in favor of responsible alternatives that don’t undermine care or impose job-killing tax hikes at a time when American families and small businesses can least afford it.”
