Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today issued the following statement after Canadian National (CN) petitioned the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to order the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to issue an expedited ruling on CN’s proposed acquisition of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway (EJ&E) line:
 
           “CN continues to follow the same arrogant playbook.  They know that the damage this merger would cause is becoming more and more evident, and they want to force regulators to rubber stamp it before the public interest can be protected.
 
           “Their lawyers may want to skip the public comment and review process, but the safety and quality of life of suburban residents shouldn’t come second to CN’s bottom line.
 
           “The STB soundly rejected CN’s petition to rush this decision, and I’m optimistic that its position will prevail in court.  From safety to traffic to pollution -- the impact this merger would have deserves a thorough and complete evaluation before any decisions are made.”
