Biggert Responds to Democrats' Health Care Plan: Presses for Commonsense Alternatives

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13th) today issued the following statement in response to the health care bill introduced by Congressional Democrats:

“The bill introduced today is an enormously expensive expansion of government-run health care.  It’s not reform, it’s a trillion-dollar health care experiment.  Although House Democrats claim that their bill will contain costs, they propose to finance it by raising taxes on small businesses and families.  Independent analyses suggest that these tax hikes will destroy millions of jobs, at a time when Illinois’s unemployment rate has passed 10% and the national unemployment rate is not far behind.

“Instead, we need to contain costs through commonsense reforms, such as promoting health information technology, reforming medical malpractice laws, and combating waste, fraud, and abuse in the Medicare system.  These simple reforms would save billions of dollars and make health care more affordable for working families and small businesses.  These are the kinds of reforms that Americans need, not higher taxes and more government bureaucracy.”
