  1. I am profoundly disappointed that Ambassador Rice, such a well qualified woman of color, would be denied the opportunity to become our next Secretary of State due to the baseless and manufactured allegations of the radical right.

I have known and worked closely with Ambassador Susan Rice for many years—on many global issues. From the genocide in Sudan to the ongoing violence in Syria, the humanitarian crisis in Haiti and the global HIV/AIDS crisis. Ambassador Rice works each and every day to advance the highest ideals of our country and would have been an outstanding Secretary of State.

    •  #News: Congress woman Barbara Lee The continued growth of jobs in the private sector shows that our economy is heading in the right direction, and is a clear signal that we must work together in Congress to avoid stymieing that growth. House Republicans should work with Democrats to extend the middle class tax cuts and the emergency unemployment compensation program to encourage consumer spending, job creation, and strengthen the economy for all

  3. A fellow Mills College graduate, Dave Brubeck served a crucial role as a visionary who helped to define jazz. My thoughts are prayers are with his wife and family during this difficult time.
  4. Today, my colleague and dear friend Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey delivered her final address on the House floor. She spoke out 444 times on ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – a fighter until the end of her career for peace and justice around the world and here at home.
  5. I spoke on the House floor today on the need to support renewable energy research programs & give props to Bay Area institutions like PolyPlus Battery Company, East Bay Municipal Utility District, UC Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for working on innovations that will power our future and fuel our economy.
  6. I'm very pleased to congratulate the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations for receiving nearly $250,000 in Health and Human Services grant funding to fight Hepatitis B. Over half of the people infected with Hepatitis B in the U.S. are Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander, and I'm heartened to see AAPCHO receive the resources they need to address this disparity.
  7. Did you know military related spending accounts for nearly 60% of our federal discretionary spending? This has to stop! Without meaningful defense spending reforms and significant spending cuts on the table, there is no pathway back to the budget surplus we enjoyed before the decade of unchecked defense spending took off. See helpful chart below from The Peace Alliance.

  8. This morning in East Oakland we rallied for a budget plan that makes millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share and that doesn't include cuts to the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits that millions depend on. The message was loud and clear - we must say "no!" to continued attempts to balance the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable Americans.

  9. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted 64 years ago today. As we mark International Human Rights Day today, let us recognize the important progress made and resolve to continue our work to fight for and protect all rights enshrined in the Declaration. 11. Catch me on Current TV’s “Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer” tonight at 5pm PST/8pm EST. I will discuss the need to expedite troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, the attack on Benghazi and protecting the middle class.

  12. Today, Congressman Gary Peters and I sent a joint letter to House and Senate Leadership - with the support of 78 of our colleagues - calling for full extension of unemployment benefits. With millions of Americans still struggling to recover from the recession, we can't afford to strip one of the only remaining lifelines for workers that are eager to get back to work.
  13. Check out my new blog on defense spending. As President Obama and leaders in Congress seek to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff", any agreement must address the immense contribution that the Pentagon makes to the debt.
  14. This article has an important message about HIV in the African American community and the need to raise our voices to do something about it.
  15. I have long said no serious plan to address the deficit can go forward without defense spending reforms on the table. The bloated Pentagon budget has increased a staggering 95 percent dating back to 2000. It is time to say enough is enough; and reign in Pentagon spending so we can invest in job creation, education and infrastructure here at home.
  16. Great to see this important proclamation marking Minority Enterprise Development Week. For more info, visit www.BusinessUSA.gov, a centralized, one-stop platform for businesses to access services that can help grow and hire.
  17. Proud member of the Progressive Caucus "Gang of Six"! Click here to read our framework for a plan that raises significant revenue, protects working families and the vulnerable, and requires corporations and the wealthy to pay their fair share.
  18. Good segment this weekend on CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta about unjust and discriminatory HIV laws which are on the books in over 30 states throughout our country-- including in my home state of California!
  19. Getting ready to join a World AIDS Day Twitter chat (12- 12:15ET) with Alicia Keys, Valerie Jarrett and Greater Than AIDS Campaign. Follow me (@RepBarbaraLee) and #WAD2012US to join the conversation.
  20. I'm proud to support Lawrence Berkeley Lab's contributions to a new Batteries and Energy Storage Hub that just received $120 million in Dept of Energy grant funding. The Hub will combine the efforts of five DOE national laboratories, five universities, and four private firms to make critical advances in hybrid and electric vehicle technologies.
  21. I know that these days, the notion of congressional unity sounds like an oxymoron. But one thing I've learned from working on HIV/AIDS my entire political career — we are far better united than divided. And together, we have made some extraordinary things happen.

Check out my piece in POLITICO today marking World AIDS Day.
  22. As we mark World AIDS Day on December 1, the Blueprint provides an important roadmap in our renewed efforts to transform the international response to this epidemic and accelerate progress toward making the end of AIDS the legacy of our generation.
  23. Congratulations to three Berkeley-based institutions that have been selected to receive highly competitive Department of Energy funding for green technology innovation. Over 10% of the $130M in Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy funding announced today was awarded here in the 9th Congressional District!
  24. I am pleased and honored to represent my colleagues as the Regional Representative on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. In this role I will continue my advocacy for our region and my state. I am excited to work with my colleagues as we move our inclusive agenda forward and reignite the American dream for all.
  25. At a time when millions of Americans continue to struggle to find work and nearly 50 million Americans are living in poverty, we do not have to hurt poor and vulnerable Americans to find a pathway forward for our country. I am fighting to prevent cuts to critical safety net programs!
  26. Middle-class family with two children would see $2200 tax increase next year if tax cuts aren't extended. It is long past time to end the Bush Tax Cuts above $250,000, end the billions in subsidies for Big Oil and close the countless loopholes that allow huge corporations and the super rich to avoid paying what they owe.

  27. I was honored to take part in this important anthology. While we have made tremendous progress in recent years, we must not lose sight of the long road ahead. Together, we can-- and must-- end AIDS. For more info, see here: http://www.howaidsends.org/
