  1. WINTER BEGINS TODAY - Today the winter season begins and as you rush to find last-minute Christmas gifts and travel to spend the holidays with loved ones, think about what a great and blessed nation we live in and REMEMBER the men & women serving abroad unable to make it home.

And now, a word on winter from Walt Whitman.

  5. TODAY IN HISTORY - 235 years ago, Gen. Washington & his army arrived at Valley Forge where they spent the harsh winter. The suffering troops, who held together by loyalty to the Patriot cause and to General Washington, emerged stronger and better disciplined. Nine days later they defeated the British at the Battle of Monmouth.

  8. THE PRESIDENT'S FISCAL CLIFF DEMANDS ARE IRRESPONSIBLE - We are two months into a new fiscal year. The sad reality is spending is up 16%, $87 billion. That is where the problem lays, that is where the President needs to start addressing and that is what we want to solve in the long run; an America for the children and the future we can build on and one that can create jobs.

  19. A "HIGH SPEED" SPENDING PLAN TO NOWHERE - 8)% of California high-speed rail remains unfunded, with no path toward committed and sustainable funds for the project. The current lack of any private commitments should be a major red flag, not o...nly to the Obama administration but to Sacramento, that there remains heavy concerns on the long-term viability of this project, both in construction costs and ongoing operating costs if the rail is ever constructed.See More
  20. It was true then, and it's true now. We need a balanced approach to the fiscal cliff that includes spending cuts. Raising taxes on the American people won't solve our problem.

  26. Today, I had the opportunity to speak with small business owners on the challenges they will face if President Obama does not act on the latest House Republican proposal to avoid the ‘fiscal cliff.’ As a former small business owner I am awa...re of how hard it is to run a small business. Unfortunately, the President’s insistence on raising taxes on these job creators will be burdensome and harmful to their operations. Small businesses are the engine of our economy and House Republicans continue to have their back.See More

  28. MY OP-ED ON THE FISCAL CLIFF:

"Before I came to Congress, I was a small business owner. I started a deli in my hometown of Bakersfield, Calif., that I creatively named 'Kevin O’s.' As any small business owner knows, starting a business is ...not glamorous work. I made the deli countertop in my garage with my dad, and counted on my friends and family to 'volunteer' their labor until I could afford to pay them. While it wasn’t a gold mine, people in Bakersfield seemed to like the sandwiches and after a couple of years I was able to sell the business so I could go to college."

  30. “The President says he needs more revenue. We offered more revenue in a way that protects small business. We put revenue on the table. That is a fundamental difference than you’ve heard from Republicans eight months ago so. That is compromi...se, and a place where the President should be able to get. But at the same time the president has offered nothing in spending cuts after he said he wanted a balanced approach. He needs to get serious.”
