Evans County dates only to 1914, when it was designated from territory formerly part of Tattnall and Bulloch counties. It is among the smallest counties in Goergia, but it has some of the richest soils to be found on the entire Coastal Plain.
Evans County occupies what was once one corner of original Washington County, lands ceded by the Creek Indians in 1773. Claxton, the county seat, was formerly known as Hendrix.
Evans County lies on the route of the Old Sunbury Road which threaded its way along a small divide from the old port of Sunbury in Liberty County to Greensboro above the headwaters of the Ogeechee River. It was one of the longest vehicular routes in late eighteenth century Georgia and remained in use until other, larger ports replaced Sunbury in importance.
