Barrow Kicks Off Service Day in Savannah PDF Print

Congressman encourages residents join neighborhood service projects across the region to spur community improvement, renovation, and revitalization

Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) helped paint the Union Mission's Parent and Child Building in Savannah today, following President Obama's call to national service. Earlier this summer, the White House launched a national service initiative called "United We Serve" to help meet growing social needs resulting from the economic downturn. This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects. Congressman Barrow will also participate in a service activity in the Augusta area.

"No matter how tough things get, there have always been those who pitch in to help others," said Barrow. "It doesn't matter if you can give a few hours or a few days, the work you do as a volunteer will help our community and help someone less fortunate. There are organizations that need our help, and what they do is always worth the effort. I want to thank Union Mission for all that they do for the Savannah area, and for giving us a chance to take part in what they do to make Savannah better."

Residents who would like information on service projects they can join or organizations they can help, or to learn more about "United We Serve," are encourage to visit www.serve.gov http://www.serve.gov/.
