Washington, DC - Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced today that Savannah Arts Academy student Edward Nixon has won the 2009 Congressional Art Competition, and will be representing Georgia's 12th District in Washington, D.C.  Nixon's piece, Plan 1 from Outer Space, is an example of mixed media, and will hang with the winners from across the country in the tunnel that connects the U.S. Capitol to the House Office Buildings.  Many members of Congress, staff, and visitors walk through the tunnel everyday.

"I'm so proud that Edward Nixon will be representing our district in the Capitol this year," said Barrow.  "Georgia's students are among the most talented in the nation, and now folks who are visiting our Nation's Capitol will be able to see it firsthand.  I'd like to congratulate Edward for his fine work."

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of high school students in their districts. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.  Nixon's piece was chosen from over 200 entries in the art competition, which was held at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
