This nationwide art competition, sponsored by Members of Congress through competitions held in their congressional districts, affords creative high school students the opportunity to showcase their talents in Washington, D.C. Each year, the winning entries, one from each congressional district, are displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
The first place work will be professionally framed and will be sent to Washington to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. The winning artist will be invited to go to Washington for a national reception to honor the winning artists from all over the country.
Artwork categories are as follows:
- Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
- Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers
- Collage: must be two dimensional
- Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block printso
- Mixed media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, etc.
- Computer generated art
- Photography
First place artwork will hang in the Capitol for the entire year of the exhibition and cannot be returned to students earlier. Students, therefore, should submit artwork they will not need for other purposes.
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
