Biggert to Host Senior Fair

Bolingbrook, IL – U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13) will host a Senior Fair to connect area seniors with tips on avoiding identity theft and fraud, and get free health screenings, important information on Medicare and veteran benefits, and more.  The Senior Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, September 6, at the Levy Center, 251 Canterbury Lane in Bolingbrook.

"In today’s tough economy, seniors who rely on fixed incomes are forced to do more with less,” said Biggert.  “High health costs and looming tax hikes create stress and put an added strain on seniors’ pocketbooks.  Our Senior Fair aims to connect seniors with an array of resources that can help them save money and take advantage of programs designed to make life a little easier.”

The FBI will teach attendees how to spot senior scams, and avoid fraud, crime, and identity theft.  Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford’s Office will host an I-Cash booth where seniors can check to see if they have unclaimed money or assets.  Additionally, the Senior Services Center of Will County will provide information on senior meals, nutrition, and safety programs as well as prescription drug, property tax, and Medicare assistance.

“In Washington, I’m fighting for common sense solutions that will safeguard and strengthen senior health and retirement programs like Medicare and Social Security,” said Biggert.  “Here at home, our Senior Fair will offer seniors one-stop shopping for programs designed to enhance seniors’ financial security and health and wellness.  Additionally, seniors will have the opportunity to jump right past the bureaucratic red tape and speak with representatives from federal and state agencies.”

Representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services will be available to answer seniors’ questions regarding Medicare coverage.  Additionally, a representative from the Department of Veterans Affairs will be on hand to help veterans with questions regarding veterans’ benefits.

The Senior Fair will also feature flu shots and health screenings for seniors to get their blood pressure checked or get a diabetes screening.  The Illinois Council of Health System Pharmacists will host an “Ask a Pharmacist’ booth for seniors with questions about medication.  The Bolingbrook Police Department will collect old prescription drugs for disposal.
