REP. ENGEL – SECURITY CAMERAS AN IMPORTANT TOOL IN PREVENTING TERROR ATTACKS AT HOME

Washington, DC--The following is a statement from Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) regarding the arrest of suspects in the attempted car bombing in Times Square this weekend. Authorities arrested a naturalized American citizen from Pakistan before he boarded a flight to Dubai, and two more suspects were arrested in Pakistan today.

“In light of the vital role played in the investigation by the many security cameras in the vicinity, I want to reiterate my call for increased funding for security cameras for religious groups and non-profit organizations that could be targets for violence. As we have been soberly reminded, New York City remains the prime target for international terrorists. In fact, almost exactly a year ago, the FBI and the NYPD foiled an attempted plot against synagogues near my home in Riverdale and against the JCC-Y in Rockland County. At that time, I called for increased Homeland Security grant funding for security cameras for religious institutions. Today, I renew my call to Secretary Napolitano to make that funding available.

“It is clear, we must take full advantage of the workable technology available to us to enable law enforcement, and vigilant citizens, to protect our homeland and bring our enemies to justice.

“I would like to express gratitude to the attentiveness and quick thinking shown by everyone involved in the discovery and removal of the car bomb threat made in Times Square this weekend. From the observation and fast action by the vendor, to the swift decision by the NYPD Mounted Police Officer to call for assistance to clear the area, and the decisive action taken by the New York Police Department and the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the response was outstanding and culminated in the arrests made in the last 24 hours. The vigilance of New Yorkers and the professionalism of our law enforcement saved countless lives.”
