REP. ENGEL – SANDFORD POST OFFICE CLOSURE NO LONGER CONSIDERED

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) issued the following statement after being informed that the U.S. Postal Service will no longer consider the Sandford Station Post Office in Mount Vernon for closure.  The current plan by the Postal Service to close hundreds of post offices nationwide would slash hundreds of thousands of jobs, while failing to identify root causes for their massive debt.

“I informed the Postal Service of the importance of the Sanford Post Office to the people of Mount Vernon, and pointed out how it did not fit the criteria for closure.  I welcome the decision to no longer consider it for closure.  However, I remain disappointed that they are pinning their financial woes on seniors and working families in New York, and around the nation, rather than looking at the real reasons why they have lost money.  The people of the Westchester, Rockland and the Bronx rely on their neighborhood Post Offices and it will be a hardship for many residents who are not able to easily travel to other locations. They continue to charge more for services, but make them less accessible.  This is a business plan designed for failure.”
