Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) said on Monday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended the registration deadline for those affected by hurricanes and tropical storms this summer.  The deadline for federal disaster assistance was originally Oct. 31, but has now been extended to December 15.

“FEMA’s decision will be very helpful to those who suffered immeasurable damage during Hurricane Irene.  For some, digging out of the mess has been a lengthy and difficult process, and a longer deadline will allow many of them to apply for badly-needed assistance.  Disasters such as Hurricane Irene show that the federal government, and all of the resources which come with it, are vital to help people when they are in their greatest need.  I am pleased that FEMA is being very accommodating in the process so that all eligible survivors can receive the help they need,” said Rep. Engel.

To register, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.  Phone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET, seven days a week until further notice. People with hearing disabilities can use the TTY number, 800-462-7585. Applicants can also register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or with any web-enabled mobile device or Smart Phone at m.fema.gov. Follow the link to “apply online for federal assistance.”

Disaster assistance to individuals could include grants to help pay for temporary housing needs, essential home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources. Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are also available for homeowners, renters and business owners to repair or replace real or personal property.
