Washington, DC--Congressman Eliot Engel issued the following statement recognizing the 77^th anniversary of Social Security. 

“For almost eight decades, Social Security has provided a lifeline to millions of Americans and improved the lives of those who would be in great need without it.  It has been one of our most successful social programs – just as Medicare and Medicaid have been – and provided income security to seniors, children, and people with disabilities enabling them to live longer, happier, healthier lives. 

“There are over three million Social Security beneficiaries in New York – and another six million or so who benefit from Medicare and Medicaid – totaling billions of dollars in benefits.  Almost one-sixth of my district – in the Bronx, Westchester and Rockland Counties – receives Social Security benefits.  I am determined to preserve and strengthen Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and honoring our commitment to today’s seniors today, and the generations of seniors to come.”
