REP. ENGEL HONORED BY NEW YORK LEAGUE OF HUMANE VOTERS

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot Engel was honored last week by the New York League of Humane Voters at their annual gala event in New York City. The award was presented to him by world famous artist Peter Max, and his wife, Mary. To view Rep. Engel’s speech, click here - http://www.youtube.com/user/NYLHV#p/u/35/MQtV3KRki5k

Rep. Engel, a member of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, was recognized by the Humane Society of the United States as supporting every major piece of pro-animal legislation in the 110th Congress, and is well on his way to a similar distinction for the 111th Congress.

Rep. Engel is a co-sponsor of H.R. 503, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, to prohibit the knowing and intentional transport of horses for slaughter for human consumption. It also increases the penalties for those who seek profit from selling horses, many of whom could have been adopted by loving owners.

He has also been a repeated co-signer of a letter to federal appropriators urging full funding for enforcement of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, the Animal Welfare Act and federal laws designed to stop animal fighting. He has also supported programs to address the needs of animals living through disasters, both natural and manmade.

Rep. Engel said, “I am committed to the well-being of animals and their fair treatment. I believe that humans have a fundamental obligation to protect animals from cruelty and suffering. I have always supported increased enforcement of all laws designed to protect animal rights and I will continue to do so in the future. As a proud dog owner, I also commend the League of Humane Voters of New York for their extraordinary work advocating for creatures who have no means of advocating for themselves.”

“The New York League of Humane Voters is proud to have bestowed our honor onto Congressman Engel, who has been a tireless defender of animal rights over the years and is a valued and trusted ally in our cause. I know that together we will continue to work hard to protect animals and prevent cruelty wherever and whenever it may occur. I look forward to continuing to work side by side with my good friend, Congressman Eliot Engel, on this effort,” said John Phillips, Executive Director of the New York League of Humane Voters.
