OBAMA PLAN TO BOOST U.S. TOURISM WILL INCREASE JOBS; AID REGIONAL ECONOMIES, ESPECIALLY NEW YORK STATE

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY) today praised President Barack Obama’s plan to boost tourism in the U.S. in an effort to increase jobs and revenues across the country.  Rep. Engel is especially excited for the opportunities for more people to visit New York City, including his sections of the Bronx and surrounding Rockland and Westchester Counties. 

“Boosting travel and tourism to the U.S. is a great idea. The White House says that more than a million jobs can be created over the next decade with increased tourism. America has an endless supply of incredible places to see – from the beaches of Hawaii and California, to the glaciers of Alaska, landmarks such as Mt. Rushmore and the Grand Canyon, to urban centers like Los Angeles and my home city of New York.  There are so many things to see in New York, you could spend a lengthy vacation and not see everything.  In my district alone, tourists can come see the Hudson River and the awe inspiring Palisades, and depart from docks in Rockland and Westchester Counties for river tours.  They can visit the historic and beautiful downtown village centers throughout Rockland and Westchester. The lower Hudson River is home to the American Revolution. General Washington left from Dobbs Ferry to fight the final battle of our revolution at Yorktown.

“We also have beautiful parks throughout the district – Van Cortlandt, Rockland Lake, and Memorial Field, just to name a few.  I welcome the chance to have more people from around the country, and around the globe, come to our neighborhoods and see the 17th District that I know and love.

“And considering the inability of the House GOP Majority to work with Democrats to put together a new jobs bill, anything that the President can do from the Executive Branch is certainly welcome.  Perhaps if we spent more time talking with each other rather than creating, and then reacting to, manufactured budgetary crises, then we could accomplish something to help put people back to work. 

“The President’s plan to increase visa processing is a solid idea to enable more people to travel to the U.S.  I encourage my colleagues in Congress to work in a bipartisan manner with the President to make these changes sooner rather than later.”
