ENGEL CONGRATULATES BRONX AWARD WINNING SCHOOLS

American Studies and Bronx Science in top 100 nationwide

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot Engel congratulated the High School of American Studies at Lehman College and the Bronx High School of Science as gold medal winners for placing in the top 100 schools nationwide in the U.S. News and World report on America’s best high schools. The Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy received a silver medal.

Rep. Engel said, “I am proud to be able to represent these schools which placed so high in the U.S. News study of some 21,786 public high schools. These schools were recognized for ‘for considerably outperforming their state's standards’ and for doing an excellent job of preparing their students for college.”

New York State, he said, placed second, behind California, in the number of top ranked schools with 53 high schools receiving gold medals.
The methodology for identifying America's Best High Schools how well the schools served all of its students while producing measurable academic outcomes. The methodology was developed by School Evaluation Services measuring the schools’ ability to exceed statistical expectations, exceed state averages for their least advantaged student groups, and best prepare students for college.

Rep. Engel, a former teacher, said that education is the key to America’s future. “Placing so high among the 21,000-plus schools measures in a marvelous accomplishment,” he said. “These schools and the students, teachers and administrations have every reason to be proud.”

The 11-term congressman said that this Administration and the Democratic-led Congress authorized $53.6 billion under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to help school across America, passed the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act to make critical investments to modernize, upgrade and repair school facilities across the country, and authorized billions more to help low income students and other educational programs.
