CONGRESSMAN ELIOT ENGEL ON LOCAL FLOODING AND BUDGET CUTS

Washington, DC -- “Today’s flash flooding in Rockland and Westchester stresses the connection between budget negotiations in Washington and how they affect people’s everyday lives. Our immediate focus must be on managing the floodwaters and responding to the disaster. However, in Washington, the Republican-controlled House has made cutting the Army Corps of Engineers budget a priority.  A major function of the Corps is flood control. This is what happens when you can only think of the cost of programs and not their value. People in desperate need of help are left to fend for themselves. We are Americans together, even when it costs money to help.

“I will continue fighting to preserve projects that are vital to Rockland and Westchester, and work to ensure that homes are repaired and businesses are back on their feet.”
