STATEMENT FROM REP. ENGEL – JUSTICE FOR DR. GEORGE TILLER

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) applauded the conviction of Scott Roeder in Kansas for the murder of Dr. George Tiller, who was killed on May 31, because he was a doctor who was performing abortions.

“The jurors in Kansas instantly realized Roeder was a cold-blooded murderer, as it only took 37 minutes to reach the guilty verdict. Roeder walked right up to Dr. Tiller as he was worshipping in his church, pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger. This was done in front of Dr. Tiller’s loved ones and his fellow parishioners. It is my hope he will never be freed from prison.

“It was unconscionable for the judge to even consider allowing the defense to plead their case based on the killer’s belief that deadly force was justified because Dr. Tiller posed an imminent threat. That would open the floodgates to vigilantism, and I am glad that the judge decided against it.

“Even if we disagree on issues, we must obey the rule of law. Abortion is one of the most sensitive issues facing our country, and emotions are strong on both sides. However, disagreement is not a call to arms. Debate is not a reason to inflict violence, and deeply-held convictions are not a reason to murder. I sincerely hope that the verdict handed down today will stop those who may believe violence is acceptable to advance their beliefs.

“Dr. Tiller’s wife said their family wished for him to be remembered for his legacy of service to women, and the help he provided to those who needed it. The list of women and their families who owe Dr. Tiller a debt of gratitude is endless. Each and every one of them mourned his loss and welcomed this verdict. I can assure Mrs. Tiller that I, and many others, will remember her husband’s legacy and will mourn his loss.”

Rep. Engel is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health and a staunch supporter of a woman’s right to choose.
