REP. ENGEL STATEMENT ON 2013 BUDGET REQUEST

Washington, DC -- With President Obama releasing his proposed 2013 budget today, Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) urged the House Republican Majority to abandon partisan rhetoric and work with the President and House Democrats to create a FY 2013 budget that is fair and equitable to all Americans.

“It is absolutely possible for us to be fiscally responsible without gutting our social safety net or ignoring our fraying infrastructure and education systems.  President Obama’s budget does just that – it provides aid to our struggling transportation system and to our schools, it cuts the deficit by $4 trillion over the next 10 years, and it requires the wealthiest of Americans to pay a more fair share, removing the substantial burden on working, middle-class families,” said Rep. Engel.  “Sadly, I am afraid any vote taken by the Republicans will be like last year’s House GOP budget - ending Medicare as we know it, ignoring our infrastructure, resurrecting the culture wars, and giving another gift to their friends in Big Oil.”
