REP. ENGEL SLAMS REPUBLICANS FOR POLITICAL VOTE AGAINST RECOVERY

Washington, D.C.--“I was very disappointed that there was not one Republican vote in the entire House of Representatives for the stimulus package with our nation’s economy teetering on a full-fledged depression. President Obama reached out to them – just as he promised he would. The President showed true leadership in putting party politics aside and putting the needs of our country first. We are in this mess in the first place thanks to eight years of a Republican presidency and six years of them having full control of the government. Now, all they can offer the nation is more of the same failed ideas.

“The Democratic leadership allowed the Republican House membership substantial input and amendments, and even removed provisions in the Economic Recovery Package that would save taxpayer money in health care in the long term. A provision funding reproductive healthcare was removed, as was funding for repairing the National Mall which is considered to be “America’s front yard.” The Republicans were given a chance to exhibit leadership and join with us to put Americans first. They refused to cast even a single vote to help pass this critical legislation needed to help put Americans back to work. America overwhelmingly elected President Obama and with increased Democratic margins in both the House and Senate, we will continue to find new ways to beat back the recession even if the Republicans refuse to help America recover.”
