Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) congratulated New York Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan upon his appointment to Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI.  Cardinal is the second-highest rank in the Roman Catholic Church.  The ceremony will take place in Rome on February 18.

“Archbishop Dolan’s elevation to Cardinal is a well-deserved recognition for him, and a tribute to New York, as he follows in the long line of New York archbishops to become Cardinals.  He has been a faithful leader to all Catholics in our region, and has enriched our state with his leadership and service to the community. He has a great sense of humor and a gift for self-deprecation.  I am confident he will continue doing exactly what he has been doing – serving the Church, its followers, and the community, only now from the higher position in the College of Cardinals.  This is a proud day for the Cardinal-designate, his family and for New York.  He deserves all of the accolades he is receiving.”
