REP. ENGEL HONORED TO RECEIVE NAACP "A" RATING

Washington, D.C--Congressman Eliot Engel is proud to have received an “A” rating from that NAACP for his voting record in the 110th Congress. The report card evaluates 40 key civil rights votes taken in the last Congress which evaluates key civil rights votes taken in the last Congress.

“I am deeply honored to receive such high marks from the NAACP for my work and I am doubly honored this award coincides with Black History Month. At a time when our first African-American president sits in the Oval Office, there have been great achievements for African-Americans, but there is still a great deal of work to be done,” said Rep. Engel.

Rep. Engel added, “Our schools are crumbling, our economy is collapsing, and our health care is both unavailable and unaffordable to millions of Americans. We must continue to pass strong legislation to promote equality, freedom and accessibility for all Americans.”

Among the legislation that Rep. Engel supported as part of the NAACP scorecard:

* Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 (H.R. 2)
* College Student Relief Act of 2007 (H.R. 5)
* Employee Free Choice Act of 2007 (H.R. 800)
* Small Business Lending Improvements Act of 2007 (H.R. 1332)
* Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007 (H.R. 2831)
* Children’s Health and Medicare Protection Act of 2007 (S-CHIP re-authorization – H.R. 3162, along with other related votes)
* National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act of 2007 (H.R. 2895)
* Health Centers Renewal Act of 2008 (H.R 1343)
* Credit Cardholders Bill of Rights Act of 2008 (H.R. 5244)

“I am proud of each and every one of the votes I cast in the last Congress used by the NAACP to grade us and I look forward to earning another ‘A’ grade next year. As the passage of Lily Ledbetter and the upcoming S-CHIP bill signing indicate, this should be a very good year for legislation that benefit both the African-American community and the entire nation,” added Rep. Engel.
