REP. ENGEL EARNS PERFECT SCORE ON WOMEN'S ISSUES

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) earned a perfect 100 percent score from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for his voting record in the first session of this Congressional session.  Rep. Engel regularly scores high grades from AAUW due to his support of legislation important to women.

Among the legislation scored by AAUW in this year’s ratings:

  • He opposed the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Act (H.R. 471) – Private school voucher reauthorization. 
  • He co-sponsored the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act (H.R. 2016)  – requiring schools to adopt policies to prevent and respond to incidents of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. 
  • He opposed the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act of 2011 (H.R. 1) – The bill severely cut funding for such programs that helped children remain in school, provide funds for college education, job training programs, and access to affordable health services.
  • He opposed the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act of 2011 (H.R. 2560) – to impose caps on federal spending for FY 2012 and beyond, drastically damaging the social safety net with cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. 
  • He co-sponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 1519) Co-sponsorship – empowering women to negotiate for equal pay and strengthen enforcement. 
  • He opposed the Pence Amendment (H. Amdt. 95 to H.R. 1) – which would eliminate funding for Title X and Planned Parenthood. 

“I am very proud of my voting record on behalf of women, and thank the AAUW for this recognition.  We have seen in this Congress a concerted effort to attack women. Whether it be women's health or the money they see in their paycheck, women are being regulated by the House Majority to second class citizens. I will not stand for it, and my Democratic colleagues and I continue to fight for women and their equal rights.  We must come together to govern in a reasonable manner.  I am willing to work with my colleagues in this way, and I am hopeful many more Members of Congress achieve high scores from AAUW in 2013,” said Rep. Engel.
