REP. ENGEL APPEARING TODAY WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA AT GROUND ZERO

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) will join with President Barack Obama, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and several other New York Congressional representatives to honor the victims of 9-11 at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan today at 12:30 pm.

After U.S. forces located and killed Osama bin Laden this week, the families of the victims finally have received a small measure of satisfaction as the perpetrator of their loved ones’ murder has met his own demise.  “I was at Ground Zero three days after 9-11, and it was one of the saddest and most sobering experiences of my life.  Whenever I fly home to New York from Washington, I still expect to see the Twin Towers standing tall in the skyline.  The sadness for me, for all of New York, and Americans far and wide will likely never go away.  For the families, even with the death of bin Laden, they will never get their loved one back, and I am certain there is nothing more in the world they would want more than another moment with their spouse, parent, sibling, that they lost that day.

“The world became a better and safer place this week with the death of Osama bin Laden, even though we must remain vigilant to prevent future attacks against the U.S. and our allies.  I am honored to stand on those hallowed grounds in New York City with the President, my colleagues and the men and women who have suffered the most since 9-11.  Let us all vow to make sure no others should ever have to endure their suffering in the future,” said Rep. Engel.
