REP. ELIOT ENGEL STATEMENT ON ‘BLOODY SUNDAY' REPORT

Washington, DC--The Saville Report confirms what we have known since that frightful day of January 30, 1972 – the Catholic civil rights marchers were shot by British paratroopers and in the words of British Prime Minister David Cameron those shootings were “unjustified and unjustifiable.”

The Saville Report finally brings some measure of justice to the families of the victims, and the victims themselves, one of whom was murdered while crawling away from the shooting and another while mortally wounded on the ground.

The 13 unarmed men were victims of a loss of discipline and self control by the British soldiers and not by threatened violence from the demonstrators, as the soldiers and their lawyers have alleged for these many years.

I congratulate Prime Minister Cameron for his address to Parliament in taking responsibility and apologizing for the killings. Perhaps some good can finally come of this if it moves both sides to come closer together in a bond of peace.
