Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel said that the Postal Service is taking comments on a feasibility study to move the mail processing operations of the Monsey Delivery Distribution Center (DDC), consolidating it with the Westchester Processing and Distribution Center. There is a moratorium through May 15^th on closures or consolidations of any postal facility.

Rep. Engel said that while the Postal Service assured him that there would be no cuts in deliveries he was not as certain. “Mail for local delivery would have to travel farther and consolidation of services usually means a consolidating of the workforce, or fewer people processing the mail. I urge the Postal Service to be cautious because fewer people usually becomes a cut in service. I am disappointed the Postal Service did not allow more time for public comment.”

Postal authorities said that retail services, such as stamp sales, would not be affected.
