AFFORDABLE CARE ACT WILL SAVE MEDICARE OVER $200 BILLION

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) issued the following statement following a report released on Monday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) stating through 2016, Medicare will save over $200 billion due to the Affordable Care Act.  Medicare beneficiaries will save almost $60 billion through 2016 through lower costs.

“I proudly supported the Affordable Care Act because it helps millions more American men, women and children to better manage their health, and substantially slows the spiraling costs of health coverage.  Without this law, health costs would keep rising and wreak havoc on our economy.  It is unfortunate that the House Republican Majority wasted the American people’s time by holding repeated votes to repeal or defund this historic law.  Now, as the Supreme Court prepares to render a decision on the fate of the Act, the savings of billions of dollars, and the health care of millions of Americans who would lack coverage, hangs in the balance.  Our health care system cannot go back to the days when young adults could not join their parents plans and insurance companies could reject and cap the type of coverage of whomever they decide.”
