“Last year, the ruling of the Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller overturned the District of Columbia’s ban on hand gun ownership. As a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I am pleased to see the Supreme Court’s ruling in McDonald v. City of Chicago build on last year’s ruling and move to protect our Second Amendment rights in all localities. The Supreme Court’s ruling in Heller applied only to the federal government. In City of Chicago the Supreme Court makes it clear that the Second Amendment applies to state and local governments as well. State and local governments are permitted to pass common sense laws to ensure public safety, but they cannot simply ban gun ownership all together. With this ruling the Supreme Court has taken a significant step preserving the rights our Founding Fathers found so important.”
