Department of Labor Awards Oregon with Grant to Help Local Laid Off Workers

Congressman Kurt Schrader applauded the announcement that Oregon will receive a National Emergency Grant of up to $1,137,425 to assist workers that were affected by layoffs from Joe’s Sports, Outdoor, Auto / Truck and more.
“This funding is going to help local families that have been impacted by layoffs in Clackamas, Marion, and Multnomah Counties,” said Schrader. “Laid off workers will be able to participate in workshops, receive long-term training, have the opportunity to compete for jobs in rapidly growing industries, and will be able to receive one-on-one assistance. Projects like these are exactly what local workers need to help them get back on their feet.”
Joe’s Sports and Outdoor filed for bankruptcy in March, 2009 and was eventually forced to lay off employees across Oregon once liquidation of its stores began.
Initially the department will release $863,865 with the intent to award up to $1,137,425. This funding was made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the services provided will be administered through The Workforce Investment Council of Clackamas County.
