One Year Ago, The Affordable Care Act
April 6, 2011 Dear Friends:
It's been a year since President Obama signed the landmark health-care bill, the Affordable Care Act, into law. What a difference a year makes! Despite what the gloom-and-doom naysayers predicted, the sky hasn't fallen and the world hasn't come to an end. In fact, if you're like most New Yorkers, your health-insurance coverage is better today than just a year ago.
Here are just a few of those improvements:
- No lifetime spending caps on your coverage
- You can't be dropped from coverage simply because you get sick
- Your children can stay on your health plan until their 26th birthday
- Kids can't be denied for pre-existing conditions

The Affordable Care Act actually reduces the deficit by $210 billion over the next 10 years and by more than $1 trillion over the next 20 years.
And the best is yet to come, such as new consumer protections and access to health-insurance exchanges for individuals without coverage. Stay-tuned for more updates as these new changes are implemented.
Sincerely,
Gary L. Ackerman
