Connolly Named to "New Democrat" Coalition vice-Chair

As the U.S. House of Representatives reorganizes for the 113thCongress, Congressman Gerry Connolly today was elected Vice Chairman of the New Democrat Coalition in the House and co-Chair of the coalition’s Task Force on Technology, Education, and Entrepreneurship.

The New Democrat Coalition represents moderate, pro-business Democrats in the House and is the second largest organized coalition of Democrats in the Congress.

The coalition is dedicated to maintaining the United States’ standing as the world’s strongest and most successful nation by creating more economic certainty for America’s workers and businesses.  Founded in 1997, the New Dems embrace the power of American ingenuity and innovation, focusing on growing the American economy, creating new American jobs, and ensuring a safe and secure future for the country.

“I appreciate the confidence of my colleagues in electing me to a leadership role in the New Dems,” Connolly said.  “Our vision represents the future of our nation and our proposals provide a framework and blueprint to help our economy grow and create good-paying jobs for Americans.”

Connolly’s role as a Chairman of the Technology, Education, and Entrepreneurship Task Force is a good fit for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District and Northern Virginia, given the region’s standing as a hub for innovation and the information technology sector.

Connolly was elected as one of the New Democrat Coalitions four vice-chairs.  Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) serves as the coalition chair.  Connolly has been a member of the New Democrat Coalition since he took office in January 2009.  He previously served as co-Chair of the coalition’s Innovation, Competitiveness, and Tax Reform Task Force.
