Federal money is on the way to help maintain commuter buses.

Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) says $2.6 million in grants is going to Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission as part of the Federal Transit Administration's State of Good Repair program.

PRTC won't receive the money until officials complete the grant application.

According to a release from Connolly's office, the PRTC's grant will used to "overhaul vehicles in its fleet in order to extend their useful lives and insure they remain safe to transport commuters from Prince William County and other area jurisdictions." PRTC can also buy new buses with the money.

“Our regional bus systems are an integral part of our region’s transportation mix and these federal grants will help insure their buses are safe for the thousands of Northern Virginia residents who use them each day,” Congressman Connolly said.  “At a time when many local and regional agencies are forced to make hard budget decisions, this funding will help insure reliable and safe for our daily riders.”

Metro will also received $1.5 million in grant money.

Both agencies were chosen during a competitive process including transit systems from around the country
