Chaffetz questions DOJ Inspector General on Fast and Furious

Sep 20, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jason Chaffetz issued the following statement today after questioning Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz on his recently released report of the investigation into reckless conduct regarding Operation Fast and Furious:

“The Inspector General did a very thorough job on his report. It validates what Chairman Issa and the Oversight Committee have been saying all along -- that this program was fundamentally flawed from the get-go. The Department of Justice didn’t have proper controls. The adults in the room, namely Attorney General Eric Holder, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein, and other senior DOJ officials, were ill served and given bad advice. They didn’t take responsibility for unacceptable failures in this gunwalking operation.

“Although the IG report sheds additional light on this operation, we are not finished yet. On this committee we not only provide oversight, but government reform as well. We need to ensure proper reforms are put in place to be certain this never happens again. “
