Congressman Cantor on WRVA Richmond's Morning News

Congressman Cantor On The Bipartisan House Passed Bill To Prevent A Tax Hike On Working Virginians: "What this bill does is it makes sure that taxes are not going to go up on anyone who has a job. That’s really what we are facing by the end of the year. Last year, there was a provision put into law which gave people some tax relief and that expires at the end of the year. So what the House did a few days ago was put a bill across the floor that made sure that tax relief will not go away and that no one will experience a tax hike at the end of this year. Unfortunately, what has happened is Harry Reid just can’t figure out how to get a bill across the floor in the Senate and is refusing to act. But we have hope and I think by the end of the year this thing will be settled and no one will have to be concerned about a tax increase."

Congressman Cantor On The Senate’s Threat Of A Government Shutdown And Inability To Get Anything Done: "As you rightly point out we have a midnight deadline tomorrow night. The House will act and be sure that we don’t bring about a government shutdown. Again, the challenge is for Harry Reid to begin to act. What’s interesting is throughout the year what we have seen is a real inability for the Senate to do anything. The House has passed more than 20 jobs bills focused on affording some regulatory relief for small businesses and startups, bills that can really bring about job creation in the private sector. Harry Reid just hasn’t been able to see a way clear to getting the job done. This is another example where it will come down to the wire and we are all watching the Senate to see if the Majority Leader over there and his party can come together and meet us to compromise to get this thing done."

Congressman Cantor On Working Together On Areas Of Common Ground: "This proposal that the House passed a couple of days ago is not our dream proposal for sure. We realize there is divided government in Washington and we have got to compromise. This reflects that will and it was a bipartisan vote and we had another bipartisan vote last night in the House dealing with the defense authorization bill so we can secure our country. That’s the spirit that we have to go forward on and it just doesn’t seem that Harry Reid or frankly the President has done that on this score. Again, it comes down to the fact that we are approaching the holidays and I don’t think that anybody wants to see this gridlock overtake the holidays and we are urging Harry Reid and the President to come sit down with us and hammer out a compromise so that all people can realize the results."
