    •  Dear Congresswoman Edwards, For 41 years Americans have been led to believe that Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid are not "affordable" without raising taxes, cutting benefits, or a combination of actions which ultimately reduces their income and security. There exists definitive logical and financial accounting proof that this is not true. Moreover, because our nation is sovereign in its issue of our currency it nor any of its programs ever faces insolvency. We issue our dollars by fiat and only need to control inflation. We do that through tax and interest rate policy. Taxes and borrowing do not raise revenue per se. Therefore, the Federal government, unlike state governments, firms and households is never constrained by revenue per se to spend. These other entities do not issue their own currency. They must have revenue or face insolvency. I encourage you to learn more about the differences between an economy based on gold standard, convertibility and fixed exchange rate rules and the one we have today based on flexible exchange rates and sovereign fiat currency backed by the "good faith and credit of the government---we the people." Please feel free to contact Prof. Warren Mosler at www.moslereconomics.com for an in depth discussion of the issue of "affordability." Here's one of his many articles on Federal monetary and fiscal policy. He and Prof J.K. Galbraith collaborate on these issues along with Dr. Stephanie Roth Kelton and Prof L. Randall Wray. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/warren-mosler/the-mmt-grand-bargain-rai_b_2268875.html?utm_source=Alert-blogger&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Email%2BNotifications

    •  Yesterday, we took a look at the December 1 murder of Kasandra Perkins (pictured) -- committed by the father of her new baby, Jovan Belcher. Some would say America is only having another National Discussion About Guns™ because Belcher played linebacker for The Kansas City Chiefs, and some famous voices chimed in. Can we do more this time than just talk, and wait for the media cycle to move on to something else? Our conversation yesterday started about guns: http://goo.gl/c0WeN. We also looked at Camp Compass, which helps instruct young people about gun safety: http://goo.gl/oBrZY. And since above all, this was an act of domestic violence, we asked Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards and author Jessica Valenti to examine that under-reported aspect of the case: http://goo.gl/hMw1w. How can we in America best turn this conversation into action? We welcome your thoughts, #nerdland.

    •  Happy Sunday, everyone. First off, before we say anything else: Olympic gold-medal gymnast Gabrielle Douglas visits #nerdland for the first time today at 10am ET on msnbc, for an interview we assure you will be unlike any other she has had yet. Trust us. For our Sunday show, Melissa takes a close look at the health-insurance reform exchanges states are either opting into or out of. Also, we'll look at the Supreme Court deciding to decide the fate of marriage equality. Repealing DOMA (The Defense of Marriage Act) will be a focus of our discussion, and well as the marriage of our past guests, Liz Margolies and her transgender husband, Scout. We'll also cover the tragedy in Kansas City last weekend, when a linebacker for The Kansas City Chiefs murdered the 22-year-old mother of his new baby girl. Melissa will talk to Demos fellow Bob Herbert and Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards and many more about gun culture, and to author Jessica Valenti about domestic violence. Also, we'll take a look at political pretenders -- don't want to give too much away on that one. See you all soon in #nerdland! Get the discussion going below.
