Key Issue: Terrorism

U.S. Navy Sailors participate in the joint command exercise Seahawk 2006 in San Diego, Calif., Aug. 24, 2006. The exercise includes port clearance, security assistance and improvised explosive device training. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Apprentice Rialyn C. Rodrigo.)

The United States must remain vigilant against terrorist attacks. I chaired the first Foreign Affairs (formerly International Relations) subcommittee field hearing at Los Angeles International Airport after the 9/11 Commission released its report on the 9/11 attack. Eleven provisions of the 9/11 Implementation Act came out of my subcommittee.

In addition, I authored anti-terrorism provisions in the REAL ID Act and the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act.

I served on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence of eight years and am now Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Congress will continue to review our laws, our intelligence capabilities, and the adaptations made by our enemies. We will respond as necessary to give law enforcement, the intelligence community, and the military the tools they need to fight this war.

The following pages provide my positions on terrorism issues as well as background papers.
