Jasper Hosts Congressional Art Competition

More than 150 young artists were on hand Friday as Congressman Robert Aderholt handed out trophies to winners of the Fourth Congressional District Art Competition. 

The overall winner of each congressional district competition has his or her artwork displayed for a year at the U.S. Capitol in the Cannon Office Building. The winner for the fourth congressional district was Niki Gurech of Guntersville High School. 

Three students from Walker County received awards: 

• Hannah Chatham of Walker High School won third place in painting; her instructor is Bill Young

• Jacob Yates of Sumiton Christian School won second place in painting; his instructor is Am E. Sloan

• Maranda Mitchell of Curry High School won first place in photography; her instructor is Amy Boshell. 

“It was just great. They don’t get to see this very often,” said Walker High School art instructor Bill Young. Several of his underclassmen entered the competition; he said being exposed to such quality works of art inspired them.

“It gives them a higher level to shoot for,” he said. 

Aderholt has been honorary chairman of the congressional art competition for several years.

“It’s impressive what we’ve seen year after year after year, and this year will be no exception. It’s a real honor to host this again,” Aderholt said just before the winners were announced. “We want to recognize not just the artwork, but also the artist.”

The ceremony was at held the Bankhouse House and Heritage Center in Jasper and had students participating from Walker, Winston, Morgan, Marshall, Marion, Etowah and Cullman counties. 

Participaton in the competition was the highest ever for the fourth district, at 162 entries. 

“Each of the pieces here ... exhibit the superb talent of the students in the Fourth Congressional District. Whether they place in the competition or not, I am happy to see our students apply themselves to this endeavor,” said Aderholt in a press release.

The Walker High School Band Ensemble, led by director Curtis Burttram, provided the entertainment during the reception.
