Birmingham Business Alliance Carrying Wish list to Washington, DC
By Michael Tomberlin | AL.com | March 06, 2012
Major transportation and health care initiatives are among the issues nearly 60 Birmingham Business Allianceinvestors and staff are taking with them to the nation's capital this week for the annual Washington, D.C., Fly-in.
The BBA will deliver its federal agenda to legislators during the trip March 7-8.
Topping the list is the call to begin construction on the 52-mile, $4.7 billion Northern Beltline, the northern complement to Interstate 459 that BBA and its predecessor, the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce has pushed for years despite resolute opposition from environmental groups.
The BBA's wish list also includes pushing for continual federal funding for medical and biomedical research and eliminating overly burdensome regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies.
The BBA's Washington agenda includes a luncheon with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; briefings with Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa; Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile; U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Vestavia Hills; U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville; U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks; and U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Birmingham; and a tour of the new Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial.
Also, the BBA will partner with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce to host a reception Wednesday evening.
