U.S. Service Academy Nominations

In 2003, I introduced legislation to increase American Samoa's military academy appointments from 1 to 2.  The House and Senate supported my efforts and included my language in the National Defense Authorization Act which the President signed into law on November 24, 2003.

As a result of this favorable action, American Samoa is now eligible to have two students enrolled in each military academy and I am pleased that more students from American Samoa will be able to attend our nation's prestigious military academies.  Each academy scholarship is worth more than $320,000 and I encourage our students to study hard and take advantage of these opportunities.

To apply for a military academy appointment, you will need a Congressional nomination.  Each applicant for nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements by July 1st of the year he/she plans to enter the academy.

  • A candidate must be at least 17 years of age and not more than 23 years of age.
  • A candidate must be a U.S. national or U.S. citizen.
  • A candidate must also be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

To meet the high qualifying standards set forth by the academies, applicants must also have a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 1,000 or an American College Test (ACT) score of 25 for English, 27 for Math, 26 for Reading, and 26 for Science Reasoning.  Obtaining a minimum SAT or ACT score does NOT automatically qualify an applicant for admission.

An applicant must also pass a Physical Aptitude Examination (PAE) administered at your school by a coach, PE teacher, or your Liaison Officer.  Applicants must also pass a medical examination which must be submitted to the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB).

In some cases, candidates that do not meet these requirements may be eligibile to attend a military preparatory school.  However, candidates may not apply directly to a military preparatory school and must be referred by a military academy.
