Israel / Jewish Issues
Throughout my years in Congress, I have been a vocal supporter of a close relationship between the United States and Israel, which is our strong ally and the only real democracy in the Middle East. I have been proud to stand with my constituents to support Israel at rallies in my district, as well as on the floor of the House. Israel has withstood decades of attacks from its neighbors, and yet has managed to maintain a flourishing, free and open, multi-cultural society that is at the forefront of many technogical and medical breakthroughs.
I believe it is important to try to facilitate peace in the Middle East, working toward a two state solution that will result in a lasting peace, with secure borders for Israel. We should be using our diplomatic and development tools to encourage Palestinian leaders to recognize Israel as a Jewish State and end terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians. One of the first bills I passed was the Arab Boycott Arms Sales Prohibition Act to prohibit government-to-government and commercial arms sales to any country that is participating in or cooperating with the boycott of Israel by Arab countries.
Concerned about growing anti-semitism, I participated in an anti-Durban II conference and have spoken out against anti-semitic acts around the world.I passed a series of bills that opened sealed government files that had remained closed for more than 50 years after World War II. These files showed what the United States knew about war criminals, when we knew it, and details of our relationships with former war criminals from Nazi Germany and Japan. Recognizing the devastating impact of the Holocaust, I have also introduced legislation to encourage education about the Holocaust, and to assist survivors in gaining just compensation from a French railroad company that reaped economic benefits from sending thousands to their deaths.
