PANEL ADDS CONSTRUCTION FUNDING AT WASHINGTON BASES
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A House subcommittee today approved eight additional military construction projects at Washington State military bases, endorsing legislation containing a total of $278 million for facilities in Washington in the next fiscal year, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks (D−Wash.) said Wednesday.
The congressman, a member of the House military construction appropriations subcommittee, said the panel agreed to the additional expenditures for next year, boosting by $50 million the Bush Administration’s FY 2003 budget request of $228 million for Washington installations. Included are major initiatives related to the Army’s “transformation” effort at Fort Lewis in addition to housing and force protection projects at Kitsap County Navy bases.
Added today to the military construction appropriations bill today at Rep. Dicks' request were:
- $10,500,000 for the construction of a 40,000 sq.ft. “Undersea Warfare Systems Dependability Center ” at NUWC Division Keyport. Originally planned for the 2004 budget, the construction supports the growing mission at Keyport for testing and validating the next generation of undersea warfare vehicles.
- $16,410,000 for a small arms training center at Sub Base Bangor
- $2,200,000 for a ship movements office and control tower at Naval Station Bremerton , related to safety and security.
- $3 million was also added to the $21.7 million budget request for anti-terrorism and force protection improvements at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The additional money will allow for the acquisition of 1.8 acres of land in downtown Bremerton for the construction of a 6-story parking structure to accommodate approximately 1,000 vehicles. It allows the shipyard to complete its security plan, creating a buffer around existing buildings and moving parking outside of the security fence.
- The Subcommittee also approved the addition of $856,000 for planning and design of a new Information Operations Armory at Camp Murray . It will be a secure and compartmentalized facility to connect with information operations field support teams deployed worldwide.
“I was determined that any expenditures planned for future years in Washington State that are related to security and force protection should be accelerated to address the new threat of terrorism,” Rep. Dicks said. “While this added requirement has resulted in a significant boost in military construction funding next year in our state, I believe it is a prudent investment at this crucial time which will enhance the safety of all of our military installations and the communities surrounding them,” he added.
