$234 MILLION IN MILITARY CONSTRUCTION SLATED FOR WASHINGTON NEXT YEAR
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Pentagon budget for the next fiscal year will contain a total of $234 million for construction activities at Washington State military bases and facilities, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks said Thursday.
Included will be $136 million for work related to the Army transformation effort at Fort Lewis and $24 million for the second stage of construction to replace the carrier pier at Naval Station Bremerton, said the congressman, who serves as a member of the House Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee.
The Army decided in 1999 to revise its warfighting strategy to meet the new and different threats of the 21st century, selecting Fort Lewis as the test bed for new equipment and for two reconfigured infantry brigades. Much of the military construction funding included in the Fiscal Year 2002 request is related to this transformation, Rep. Dicks noted.
The existing substandard pier at Bremerton is being replaced with a modern carrier-capable pier for Naval Station Bremerton and to enhance the future workload at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Rep. Dicks said.
The following is the complete military construction budget request for Washington State submitted by the Bush Administration to Congress this week:
